Nancy Marimar Vinajera Alonzo estudió Ingeniería Ambiental en el Instituto Tecnológico de Mérida. Actualmente estudia la Maestría en Ingeniería Ambiental en la UNAM. Su tema de interés y su campo de conocimiento son el tratamiento de aguas residuales municipales e industriales por procesos biológicos convencionales y no convencionales y los sistemas bioelectroquímicos como los son las Celdas de Combustible Microbianas es especial el proceso BioelectroFenton para la remoción de contaminantes recalcitrantes y producción de electricidad.


Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been extensively studied for the removal of recalcitrant contaminants such as p-nitrophenol. This is due to the strong oxidative capacity of hydroxyl radicals. One of the emerging AOPs that has gained interest are the bio-electro-Fenton (BEF) which can generate hydroxyl radicals’ in-situ in the cathodic chamber of one microbial fuel cell (MFC). In this study, the degradation of p-nitrophenol through of cathodic reactions in two-chamber MFC was evaluated using carbon brush as anodes and carbon felt as cathodes. The cathode was impregnated with different nano-particles (Fe2O3, zero valent iron and graphene/Fe2O3) used as the source of iron needed to carry out the BEF reactions. The best removal efficiencies were found at pH 3 and pH 7 using graphene/Fe2O3 as nano-catalyst, obtaining in 24 h the complete removal of p-nitrophenol and total organic carbon (TOC). Simultaneously, the MFC generated a maximum power density of 250 mW/m2. During the degradation of p-nitrophenol, the hydrogen peroxide production generate was up to 2 mg/L indicated that the mechanisms of the two and four electrons were carried out within the MFC.
