The sugarcane transformation into derived products at industrial level, produces wastewater with a high content of organic matter and nutrients. Inadequate treatment options can cause a negative impact on tropical regions in countries such as Brazil, India, and Mexico. Requiring a cost-effective, non-intrusive and eco-centric technology alternative to bridge the gap between wastewater generation and its treatment.Therefore, this study presents the hybridization of two processes for the treatment of Sugar Industry Wastewater (SIW); in a first stage which comprises the use of an Anaerobic Biofilm Reactor (ABR) in hydrolytic phase. This stage enhances nutrient and organic substances availability for the second stage in which Constructed Wetlands (CW) using ornamental plants and native natural wetlands species (Canna indica L., Spathiphyllum wallisii and Typha latifolia L.) are incorporated for organic matter and nutrients removal. The SIW was batch-fed to the ABR with stepwise organic loading rate (OLR) increments of 6, 9, 15 and 21 gCOD/L·d, TRH= 24 h, mesophilic conditions (35 ±2 °C) and acid pH (5.5 ±1), the effluent was fed to the CW using TRH=72 h without pH adjustments.

The best removal performances (OLR= 15 gCOD/L·d) showed that when the SIW leaves the ABR it has been degraded 51.11, 37.49, 28.96, 28.0 and 38.6% of COD, TS, TVS, NO3- and PO43- respectively and for the CW effluent an 87.29, 31.19, 59.46, 98.36 and 89.01% removal were achieved for the same parameters. The use of ornamental and native wetland plants provides a sustainable solution for bioremediation, highlighting their adaptability, growth and development under high organic rate and flood conditions. Converting this combined treatment in a suitable option for the treatment of agri-food wastewater.
